48minutes.netWord comes from this morning’s shootaround (via Jaymee Sire’s Tweet) that the Warriors are keeping forward Anthony Tolliver and making room by cutting loose guard Speedy Claxton.
The move is both expected to some extent — someone prediced correctly almost a week ago that the W’s would keep Tolliver — and yet also surprising, in that Claxton represented one of the Warriors’ largest expiring contracts at $5.2 million.
Honestly, I thought it would be either Chris Hunter or Devean George who got the kiss off to allow the Warriors to retain Tolliver, who had already served out two 10-day contracts and had to be given a deal for the remainder of the year or let go.

The Warriors Report: Can Stephen Curry herd his way to being a better defender?

Contra Costa Times (Marcus Thompson II):
“(Don) Nelson said (Stephen) Curry is tougher on his post defense now, and he defends pick-and-rolls well. Perhaps his biggest asset is that he understands and executes the game plan, which sets him up to have the help he needs.”I’ll admit, I’m not in the room for post-practice film sessions or present during the installation of game-by-game tweaks during morning shootarounds. And, indeed, much of playing perimeter defense in the NBA is simply a matter of guiding a player the direction you want him to go. Maybe Curry is grading out higher on these internal measuring sticks.

The Warriors Report: Despite the win, has Golden State fallen behind Sacramento and Memphis?

San Francisco Chronicle (Bruce Jenkins):
Bruce hits leadoff for the second straight day by coming with the splash of cold water for Warrior fans: Golden State has been passed up by not only Oklahoma City, but also Sacramento and Memphis.
I’m not sure I agree, over the long-term, with the last two picks — Sacramento “has moxie”? What is this, the Girl Scouts? And of course Mike Conley is ascending; he can’t possibly go any lower — but it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

The Morning Report: C.J. Watson as a starter? Ronny Turiaf in a big lineup? Don’t put too much stock into it all
Filed under: The Morning Report; Tagged as: Andris Biedrins, Anthony Morrow, Anthony Randolph, C.J. Watson, Corey Maggette, DeMarcus Nelson, Don Nelson, Jamal Crawford, Monta Ellis, Rob Kurz, Robert Rowell, Ronny Turiaf, Stephen Curry, Stephen Jackson, Victor Alexander2 CommentsBy Geoff Lepper
48minutes.netWarriors coach Don Nelson said Wednesday that he wants to treat tonight’s exhibition finale against the New Orleans Hornets as if it were a regular-season game, with a typical rotation and a closing lineup meant to procure a win.
So when Nelson listed his expected starting lineup — which already featured Corey Maggette in place of the injured Anthony Randolph — it came as a bit of a shock when C.J. Watson was the first name out of his mouth.
C.J. Watson? A guy who strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee three weeks ago? Really? Over a healthy Anthony Morrow, who’s been the Warriors’ best player in this exhibition season? Over a healthy Stephen Curry, who is already after three weeks as a pro Golden State’s best facilitator of ball movement?
Sure. This is Don Nelson, after all, whose motivational techniques never lack for bluntness. (Recall the Rob Kurz-over-Randolph situation early last season.)
I think there’s a two-fold dynamic in play here. Watson said Wednesday that his right knee is only back to 75 or 80 percent of full strength, and he’s logged less than 100 minutes of play in three exhibition games this season, so there’s a question of conditioning and using the last chance to really get Watson back into game shape.
There’s also certainly a component meant to keep expectations for Curry from getting out of control. There are going to be struggles for any rookie point guard, no matter how highly prized he may be — Steve Nash, for example, shot 42.3 percent from the floor as a backup to Jason Kidd in 1996-97, and committed a turnover just less than once in every four plays.
So to throw Curry out there on Opening Night as a starter, alongside Monta Ellis and (if Randolph still isn’t ready) Maggette in a lineup that will get slaughtered defensively, may not be the wisest course of action.

Game 76 (Warriors 111, Hornets 103): The Warriors’ Serenity Prayer gets answered
Filed under: News; Tagged as: Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright, Chris Duhon, Chris Mullin, Chris Paul, David West, Jamal Crawford, James Posey, Peja Stojakovic, Pete D'Alessandro, Robert Rowell, Steve Nash, Tim Kawakami, Tyson Chandler35 CommentsBy Geoff Lepper
48minutes.netFor more than a half century, the Serenity Prayer has been a cornerstone of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference. The Warriors accepted the things they cannot change about themselves Friday night, and in doing so become something greater than they previously had been.
By forcing Chris Paul to shoot, shoot and shoot some more, the Warriors were able to control the Hornets’ All-Star point guard in a 111-103 victory.
At first blush, the fact that Paul went off for 43 points and nine assists doesn’t look like a victory. But seven of Paul’s nine dimes went to David West, who finished with 31 points. That’s a nice number, but what the Hornets need from Paul is to get the rest of the roster involved with some spoon-fed buckets, especially since Peja Stojakovic is battling through a bad back and James Posey and Tyson Chandler are on the bench with injuries.
Instead, Hornets not named Paul or West shot 10-for-38 on Friday.
