Gross. GROSS. Horrible execution in the closing moments, by players, coaches and refs alike.
In response to your “what team could Nellie coach” question… obviously I’m not a huge fan of his current work, but I do think he could still probably get by if he had a Nash/Timmy/Baron type to improvise while on the floor. In some sense that’s faint praise, as you noted — only being a good coach when you have really talented guys isn’t all that impressive. But Baron (well, the old one) would be taking good care enough of the basketball and finding enough open three-point-shooters to give us a shot at winning some of these games. There’s just no impresario like Baron on the current roster, no matter how much we wish there was.
In some ways I think that’s the story of Nellie’s last two years. Since Baron left, he has cast about looking for a replacement. He gave Jack huge minutes and total offensive freedom, hoping he’d become Baron; how he’s doing it with Monta, and the results are no better. He’s given Curry a hugely long leash in the hopes that Curry could be his new Baron. And, hell, the only real interest he’s taken in Randolph is *as a passer*.
Nellie really wants a floor quarterback who can sift through the various mismatches on the court to find the best available option. We don’t have that guy; we actually do have a moderate amount of talent, but we don’t have That Guy. Nellie is still coaching as though we had That Guy. And that, even more than smallball, may be his defining mistake.
