Game 17, Live: Warriors (6-10) at Nuggets (12-5)

    Filed under: Commentary;

    POSTGAME

** INSTA-STAT OF THE NIGHT: Coming into Tuesday, Denver’s OREB% — the percentage of offensive-board opportunities they converted — was 24.6, or 24th-best in the league. Against the Warriors on Tuesday, that number jumped to a comically high 43.9.

** And that’s a wrap at Nuggets 135, Warriors 107. Just as much fun as you thought it would be, no?

    FOURTH QUARTER

** Can’t wait to see what Don Nelson will make of this crew after Keith Smart’s 2-3 turn at the helm.

** This is one of those times where I’m glad I’m no longer on the beat.

    THIRD QUARTER

    ** It’s full-on “I’m getting mine” mode now.

** The Warriors’ 2-3 zone is … um … well, let’s just call it rusty, in order to be kind.

** Radmanovic stiffed Stephen Curry, who was ahead of the field, on that fast break, keeping the ball instead for himself. Will turnabout be fair play?

** Monta is working so hard — no breaks on the second night of a B2B in Denver — that you start to wonder when he’ll get angry at his teammates who are not matching his intensity.

** Having connection problems at my house, which is OK. Not sure how many times one needs to post, “Hey, the Warriors’ defense is ridiculously bad” before it becomes an assumed state of being.

    SECOND QUARTER

** Is it wong that this quarter has made me want to take a nice, long nap?

** Arron Afflalo’s reaction to his third foul — courtesy of a wild drive by Corey Maggette — reminds me of the scene in “Die Hard” where Holly Gennaro realizes that John McClane is still alive because Karl is so pissed off.

    FIRST QUARTER

** That sound you hear is the air escaping from the “Chris Hunter, NBA Player” balloon.

** The Nuggets are daring Radmanovic to beat them, and so far, he is.

** No Warriors possession should ever go Vlad dribble, Vlad dribble, Vlad drive, Vlad dump to Mikki Moore baseline, Moore dump back to Vlad, who was out-of-bounds at the time. Get the ball to a playmaker.

** Nene clearly didn’t respect Vladimir Radmanovic’s hops — ordinarily, when a shotblocker trails the ball by as much as he trailed Vlad, he lets the play go, unless he really thinks he has that matchup dominated. You just don’t want to risk being the poster victim.

** The Warriors (up by seven at the timeout) are 4-15 overall in their last 19 trips to Denver. I’m still trying to figure out the last time was that they won in Denver on the finale of a back-to-back.

** Is this game being played in Madrid? It’s nothing but ole! at either end.

    PREGAME

** I wrote my weekly column for CSNBayArea.com on the Warriors, looking at how Golden State might most effectively build around Monta Ellis. They’re obviously not going to become the 2001 Sixers, where it was AI and four guys who (almost) couldn’t score in an unused gym. So they need to find a sidekick for Monta Ellis, and I submitted the name of (no surprise to anyone who reads this site) Anthony Randolph.

Of course, when I sent it in, the full headline read “Still-developing Randolph could solve the Warriors’ sidekick situation.” It was truncated into something else entirely, beginning with “Healthy Randolph…” which is fairly unfortunate given that Randolph is going to miss a week with his sprained ankle. :)

  1. Geoff, I didn’t understand your comment about glad not being on the “beat” with Nelson’s impending return? Wasn’t sure what that meant; can you clarify?

Not that it matters much, but do you know why Bell hasn’t had his surgery yet? Also, do you think he would be inclined to sign with us next year and or would the Dubs want him (for the right, low ball price as usual)?

IYHO, will Hunter stay on the roster? Who will leave? Is he a keeper for next year? Sure seems to be to me.

Speaking of next year, I told my sales rep there would be no way in hell we would renew if Nelson was the coach next season. I am rooting for his crummy meaningless win record to be over and done with so hopefully he can be kicked upstairs. but who knows with this screwed up org!

  2. geoff, not where i can send you an email, but i know you’ll appreciate this:

i’ve been listening to the Ralph and Tom segment of the KNBR annual BASHOF auction because i know that historically all of the major bay area sports organizations’ presidents (Dolich, Baer, Rowell) come on towards the end to have their harmless little pissing contest by sweetening their individual team “experiences” in hope of besting each others’ sale price, and i was dying to hear the awol Rowell do his selling. well, he jumps right into his spiel and announces that the Warriors’ Experience will be during a Suns game, and that the winner will get to meet FORMER Warrior Jason Richardson (funny in its own way - no current Warrior with enough draw/willingness?) and that JRich will provide autographed items, etc. Ralph jumps in chuckling with “so there ARE ex-Warriors who are on good terms with the organization?!” to which Rowell quickly retorts “there are actually quite a few Ralph…Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy were just in here the other night and remarked at how many people were around the building…this isn’t the time for that though. if you want to discuss those sorts of things we’ll have to arrange another time to do so. i’m here right now to push this auction forward.” followed by a brilliantly awkward silence by everyone.

good lord the guy’s a spineless fool. there are obviously far too many angles to carve up with a quick anecdote, but suffice to say Rowell rewarded my sustained listening. one particular point that is oh so hilariously ironic - Dunleavy and Murphy are our 2 happy ex-Warriors/big fans of the organization, huh? the 2 guys whose departures marked the only brief return of any success for the team in 15 years?! the carrot we’re dangling for our package is the chance to hang out with a guy who doesn’t play here anymore, and we’ll also have you know that 2 guys who nearly no one was endeared to, and who are both now long gone and not the least bit missed, think we’re just great.

holy crap. could i even love a stable team? i say no.

  3. Spineless is right. It is just infuriating how Rowell (and Cohan) simply stonewall any public appearances because they know what is going to happen–people will either be furious with them or simply ask for an accounting on their endless blunders.

I remember when DunMurphy left and you could say it wasn’t on the best of terms with the Dubs or fans. What a sad joke (mostly on us).

  4. one more thing i just have to say out loud as we assess the ascent of Monta Ellis after Jackson’s departure:

if he’s going to become any type of leader he’s got to quit being such a demonstrative prick every time Curry makes some minor rookie mistake. you can see it from your couch way too easily, and it’s an embarrassing look for someone who’s supposedly gaining maturity in leaps and bounds. yeah, we get it Monta, papa just doesn’t love you quite as much as his new little man. try and show a little humility and recall the glaring shortcomings that you exhibited as a rookie. be a man.

  5. where have you gone now, dude?

  6. Breaking our hearts again?????
