    Game 2, live: Suns 123, Warriors 101

    Filed under: Commentary;

    POSTGAME

** INSTA-STAT OF THE NIGHT: Steve Nash finished with 20 assists. Perhaps the hype around Stephen Curry will cool down a little bit now.

    FOURTH QUARTER

** @SJ Jim: When did Channing Frye become Ray Allen? As soon as he lined up against the Warriors.

** I literally just realized that the Suns were playing this whole time without Jason Richardson, serving the back half of his DUI suspension. Sad to think this easily could be more than a 24-point game.

** BTW, in two games, the Warriors have been outscored by a total of 65-41 in the third quarter. Plus ca change, c’est la meme chose.

    ** Channing Frye. SMH.

** @BrockLanders, @JoeSez: Maggette was a joint move, although now that I look back on it, it smells more and more like the Jerry West-giving-Brian-Cardinal a pile of money story, where West was sick of ownership complaining he wasn’t getting anything done. Whatever the case, Rowell needed something to sell the STHs after Baron bolted and Arenas and Brand spurned the Warriors. So Maggette got to enjoy the spoils.

** Leandro Barbosa’s cherry picking ways make me remember fondly the days when Monta Ellis would do that kind of thing.

** Ronny Turiaf hurt the left leg which already features a large knee brace. And so it begins…

Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter as well: twitter.com/geofflepper

    THIRD QUARTER

** PHX 92, GSW 70. Well, at least there’s Acie Law at power forward to look forward to.

** @Brock: No. Where would they move him to? Magette is far too selfish a player to be of value to most championship contenders.

** I’m sorry, did the TV announcer really just say that Andris is having a good game because he has eight points, eight rebounds and four assists? Well, sure, if you ignore the 17 Amar’e has hung on him, I guess you could be silly enough to believe that.

** Jackson makes a great play defensively, the Warriors’ first all night, and then they kick away the advantage with a horrible alley-oop that’s nearly stolen, followed by a three-in-the-key call on Maggette. If that doesn’t sum up this team right now, then I don’t know what does.

** Ellis, Jackson, Maggette have combined to go 11-for-30 from the floor. Simply scintillating!

** Of course, now that I say that, the W’s get two buckets back.

** With that Amar’e Stoudemire fast break slam for a 67-51 lead, this game is nearing an early completion.

    HALFTIME

** @SJ Jim: That’s just one of umpteen problems this team has defensively right now: So far in the first half, we’ve been treated to Andris not doing enough work to keep Stoudemire from setting up shop 4 feet from the rim (where he gets an easy bucket), Barbosa zeroing in and exploiting Morrow, Monta looking too tired/lazy to get over screens and Jackson being a non-entity. Good thing there’s been a couple of highlight-worthy blocks from Randolph and Azubuike, or else people might start to think Nellie doesn’t care about defense. :)

    SECOND QUARTER

** I don’t want to be the guy who keeps harping on defense. Honest. But if you’re going to turn the ball over 13 times in a half, you can’t let the opponent shoot 55.0 percent floor and 57.1 percent on 3-pointers. You can’t. Just can’t.

** Barbosa runs Morrow wide around the screen from Stoudemire for an open layup and and-one on Azubuike trying to cover the lane. That matchup does. Not. Work.

** For the second game in a row, Kelenna Azubuike is putting together a nice line. Really an underrated piece for this team.

** The Warriors are winning on the Pretty Passes scoreboard, 3-1. But they still can’t defend worth a damn.

** I’ll be interested to see how he looks when he comes back in the game, because Stephen Jackson was pretty nondescript for a guy that’s supposed to be playing his hardest.

** Barbosa drops another 3, and then the Suns commit an offensive foul trying to set him up again: Do you think teams have come to the conclusion that Morrow is a defender worth exploiting?

** Anthony Morrow can’t get suckered into going for a low-percentage steal 28 feet from the hoop when he’s supposed to be guarding a career 40.5 percent 3FG shooter in Leandro Barbosa.

** As with Wednesday, the Warriors are turning in an aesthetically displeasing performance. That can’t be good use for a ticket-sales staff that used to be able to count on at least having the entertainment factor to help them meet their quota.

** Maggette and Ellis both try to grab Turiaf’s outlet pass, and wind up fumbling it away instead. Two possessions, two bad TOs for the W’s this quarter.

    FIRST QUARTER

** 28-24 after one quarter in a W’s-Suns game? Somebody put something in the water at US Airways Center?

** Earl Clark with the rookie mistake of over-enthusiasm, biting on Maggette’s pump-fake and allowing Maggette to get to the line.

** So, after all that talk about how he needs to get Morrow and Curry on the floor together, Nelson brings Morrow in with 2 minutes left in the first. Coming off the floor: Stephen Curry. Of course.

** Nice job by Monta to clean up after Maggette was too selfish to run a 2-on-1 break properly.

** Corey Maggette’s first touch is a charge, the second one Stoudemire has drawn tonight.

** Andris is getting killed again, and it seems as though part of the problem is he gets caught very deep under the hoop, making things far too easy for opponents.

** Don Nelson said yesterday that he wanted Anthony Randolph to stop making so many mistakes. Charging into Amare Stoudemire with a leap from 12 feet out probably isn’t what the coach was looking for.

** Stephen Curry, class is in session. You can call him “Professor Nash.”

    PREGAME

** Does anyone else know why DirecTV has not picked up CSNBA’s HD broadcast? (The League Pass HD coverage is, typically, blacked out). Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

** Here’s a link to tide us over until tip-off…

Talking Points (Tim Kawakami): I’m going to write more expansively on this topic later, so I won’t go too in depth, but Tim takes aim at folks pumping up Stephen Curry and Anthony Morrow while bashing Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson.

  1. DishTV is SDV too. It sucks to watch sports in STV. Masterpiece theater, okay but basketball? Someone in Warrior land needs to understand tha tcrappy TV feeds will just discourage viewer ship and ticket sales.

  2. Well, one quarter down, three to go. I’m not really enjoying this so far… kind of hard to enjoy watching your opponent shoot 61% from the floor.

2nd quarter begins… wow, we’re turning it over a lot tonight.

On a lighter note… considering the face he’s got, whenever Curry starts to eject his mouthpiece, all I can think of is a baby with a pacifier. Not really the image I want to get from my point guard.

  3. God Magette has stunk this season, do the Cavs want him too?

  4. I wish the refs would T somebody up. I’m tired of everybody doing a Stephen Jackson impression whenever they don’t get a call. Maggette is the primary example.

  5. Somehow it feels like we should be down 20 instead of 8.

It seems like Biedrins and Turiaf have regressed in terms of defending the rim, and I felt that way in pre-season.

  6. Azubuike, 3pt, steal and 2pt.

  7. Azu is doing everything right now.

  8. How badly does Maggette have to play for Nelson to get him off the floor!

  9. I said it numerous times last season, and I’ll say it again. I hate Nelson’s defensive plan whereby our center (Biedrins) voluntarily switches off (when he really doesn’t need to) on their point guard (Nash) on the pick and roll. Stoudamire is left to dominate the paint, and Nash is left to dribble around Biedrins (or lose him and hit a 3, which just happened a minute ago). I know you have no choice to switch sometimes, but we do it voluntarily far too often, and we almost always pay the price.

  10. ugh! can’t stand the SDV,

WIll switch to watching TIVO shows.

  11. Geoff, thanks for reminding me (I think ;)) about the other defensive woes.

Btw, happy ‘09-’10, and thanks for hosting us again.

  12. Jackson was so late with that pass, it boggles the mind.

  13. This is the ugliest, most disjointed Suns/Dubs game I’ve seen in years.

  14. Biedrins is looking slightly better on D. Faked a switchoff and prevented Amare from getting to the hoop on one play, and forced Amare to dribble off his leg on the next.

Meanwhile, lets come out and say it… the refs are screwing us, for the most part (although we’re killing ourselves in other ways)

  15. Damn ….

  16. What a sloppy ass game!

  17. Way to blow the 2-on-1, Jackson.

  18. That does sum it up, Geoff.

God, Maggette is a bad actor.

  19. Dubs lookin soo lazy right now!

  20. Wow, good looking three by Monta (not a common sight)

  21. Geoff are you hearing of any plans to move Magette?

  22. Maggette fouled the seam on Dudley’s shorts.

  23. I agree on Biedrins, but he has looked a little better in this quarter.

  24. What an ugly 3rd quarter…

I flew into the UK a few hours ago and I wish I didn’t have jet lag so I wouldn’t have to watch this game. :X

There needs to be some substitutions in the game and yet no moves.

  25. The TV Announcer is an idiot!

  26. That’s the same TV Announcer that said “Jackson’s contract isn’t that bad” on his radio show.

  27. More turnovers, more fouls. I don’t know if I can watch this whole game. I don’t have anything else I need to do, either…

  28. Oh my, down by 20?

  29. We’re down 20, but we should be okay… we’ve got Cap’n Jack and we can run some iso’s for him.

  30. You know what’s weird……Curry is a first year player in Don Nelson’s offense. It seems to me Curry is the only one “running” (Nelson’s offense).

  31. Acie Law…..come on down!

    You’re the next contestant……

  32. No need for Morrow at this point, I guess…

    … (not)

  33. With all the technology at our disposal these days, wouldn’t it be great if we could hit a button on our remote and get Maggette off the floor?

  34. Man has Nelson lost his edge? This guy has turned around some very bad teams in his career and this time around, it’s looking like it’s not going to happen with the W’s.

  35. Who was responsible for Magette? Was that Mullin or Rowell?

  36. Comcast, do your game summary BEFORE the fourth quarter starts. I couldn’t see which of our players was turning the ball over (seriously)

  37. So Morrow is most effective standing still in the corner?

  38. Hey Morrow, do us a favor and don’t dribble the ball.

  39. Maggette was Mullin’s move. Good signing for Mid-level Exception but horrible for what GSW paid, 10M.

  40. I heard Nellie mention something about torn cartilage in Turiaf’s knee before, but then never heard any follow up on it. This can not be good.

  41. No wonder Anthony Randolph is on the pine!

  42. Randolph looks pretty healthy to me.

  43. Oh man that super burrito finally caught up to me!

  44. A mandatory time out- YES! (there should be a mandatory final whistle right about now… 21 turnovers for each team… oy)

  45. When did Channing Frye become Ray Allen?

  46. That went well.

  47. Geoff,

How much of Biedrins’ ineffectiveness on defense might be attributed to playing with no help up front for virtually his entire career?

Sorta like how a rookie QB behind a crappy O-line gets totally psyched out by getting sacked so much.

  48. Jon, how dare you mention team defense.
Don Nelson don’t need no freaking defense.

  49. Jon: AB played better D two years ago. It just seems like he’s giving up far too much good position. I’m planning on asking him about it on Monday.

  50. I’m going with my incredible intuition and saying Biedrins knows he’s gone by the trading deadline. Why waste energy?
