Game 70, live: Warriors (25-44) at Hornets (43-25)
Filed under: Commentary;FOURTH QUARTER:
** Jer: I don’t think Turiaf is necessarily more aggressive — I think it seems that way because Biedrins is so good as finding the seam in a D and filling the open spot that he doesn’t need to be as physical.
As for Biedrins coming back, I agree that it’d be nice to see him back out there, but with only 12 games left and his plans to play for the Latvian national team this summer, I’m not sure the Warriors won’t get more value from giving him some extra rest.
** BS: I don’t think it’s unspoken — Nelson wants Crawford to opt-out and go elsewhere, and Crawford doesn’t want to be forced into giving up $20M. Nelson sat him as a healthy scratch against the Clippers and Lakers, and Crawford asked out of the 76ers game, saying he needed more practice time. The Warriors’ next practice should be tomorrow, so we’ll see if he plays Tuesday in San Antonio.
** CR: I will say one thing in Nelson and Smart’s defense — Turiaf does not have much of a post-up game. Neither does Randolph. Nor Wright. So it’s not as though you can just dump it into those guys and say, “Here, hit that fadeaway 12-foot turnaround and keep us afloat until the perimeter players start hitting their Js.”
** You cut the lead to nine points with 90 seconds left, you get away with a blatant push to come up with a steal, creating a 4-on-2 break, and what does your offense come up with?
A pullup 3-pointer for Stephen Jackson. So emblematic of everything wrong with this team.
THIRD QUARTER:
** Perhaps Keith Smart shouldn’t converse with Ronny Turiaf at the precise moment when he’s supposed to be catching an unguarded inbounds pass.
** Not sure I’ve seen Turiaf be any more demonstrative than he was after that missed dunk attempt (and, in Turiaf’s mind, foul).
** So, what does the fact that the Warriors’ big adjustment at the half was to run everything through Jackson say about Monta Ellis’ point-guard skills?
Not much, it would seem.
** Jer: That’s a chicken-or-egg question. Did Biedrins get away from effecient conversions in the S/R, or did the Warriors go away from the S/R to Biedrins and therefore he’s gotten rusty? Of course, at this point it doesn’t matter because I think it’s a 50/50 shot that we’ll even see him again this season.
HALFTIME:
** This is one of those performances that prompts me to scurry through the league stats. Did you know the Warriors have the widest margin between their scoring average at home versus the same mark on the road? And it’s not even close.
Coming into tonight, the Warriors averaged 115.0 points in 35 home contests. In 34 road games, that dropped to 102.5, a 12.5-point-per-game dip.
The league average is a 3.2-point spread between scoring at home and on the road, so the Warriors are almost four times higher than that.
Here’s the rest of the top five: Dallas (7.4), Milwaukee (7.3), Portland (7.2) and Boston (6.4).
I’m not sure what the significance is — outside of the fact that the Warriors are ABSOLUTELY dreadful outside of Oracle — but there it is.
SECOND QUARTER:
** So, since Keith Smart did the vast majority of the work as head coach against Philadelphia on Friday, should that victory really go on Don Nelson’s coaching record?
** After 17 minutes of play, the Warriors have hit just three shots from anything outside of point-blank range. Isn’t this exactly the kind of situation Corey Maggette is supposed to thrive in?
** Can we institute a mercy rule?
FIRST QUARTER:
** Brandan Wright’s block on Chris Paul while deftly avoiding the foul — that might have been one of his best swats of the season. As bad as Monta Ellis’ absence has been for the W’s, I think Wright’s dislocated shoulder was almost as costly, since it doomed Golden State to playing small ball when it wasn’t working.
** I’m beginning to wonder at this point if Jamal Crawford will be held out for the rest of this year as part of his tug-of-war with the team. Is Dr. Fegan available for a consult?
** Stephen Jackson is really doing a fantastic job on Chris Paul, and you can tell because everytime he gets away from Jackson, he’s either scoring or dishing for someone else to score.

What’s the story tonight about Crawford? Did he not practice yesterday?
-
Wow this is hideous! Did Nellie just say jack it everytime down and don’t even think about passing?
-
Nobody can hit a jumper, so let’s take out our best post player and put in more shooters. This is terrible.
-
Turiaf is getting good looks off of almost every pick and roll. It seems like Biedrins has gotten away from that recently.
-
I hear ya Lepp, I guess it just seems like Turiaf is much more aggressive. He is bulkier, do you think that Biedrins feels like he’s not strong enough to power it in, so he has too finesse it all the time? I think if he’s able to go, they should play him, simply to get a look at a possible starting five for next season.

Man, what’s up with Crawford? Is there unspoken beef that nobody is talking about?

As I write this the smalls (Jax & smaller) have taken 55 shots…the bigs have taken 12…the conclusion is the Dubs are shooting 35%

Another national embarrassment:the NO broadcasters are in total disbelief over the run and gun offense and the zilch defense of the W’s.They had a lot to say about the “weird” basketball that is being played under Nelson. Then to think that those hogs:CM and SJ played almost the entire game.Somebody’s got NO conscience. What a poor excuse for an NBA team this is.
How can they watch Chris Paul and not see by contrast how utterly lacking they are in all aspects.Back to the playground, you thugs! -
