Game No. 53, live: Knicks (21-29) at Warriors (17-35)
Filed under: Uncategorized;FOURTH QUARTER:
** Again, Anthony Randolph has more pure athleticism than anybody on this roster — and by a wide margin.
** How on earth that wasn’t an offensive foul on Jackson, I’ll never know.
** I could watch Randolph springing off the floor to grab a rebound all day long.
** Fantastic over-the-head dish from Crawford to Maggette on the break. Baron who?
** word: Morrow ought to be in already.
THIRD QUARTER:
** Turiaf has talked in the wake of Biedrins’ injury about playing smarter to avoid silly fouls and he’s trying very hard to meet that goal tonight.
** Hey Jack, are you really so tired you can’t call out “screen” to let Monta know Harrington is behind him, about to spring Nate Robinson free for a layup?
** I’m not sure that the Warriors really can slow the tempo. That’s never been part of their game. But if they don’t find a second wind somewhere, they’re going to have to try.
** Or, you know, they could just keep getting (and hitting) open shots.
** I liked the way Monta pushed the ball there, even if Crawford wasn’t able to convert on the kick-out.
** Turiaf had that spin-and-back move by Lee sussed out. Just bad luck Lee was able to hit the righty hook regardless.
** Staying on Turiaf, I know I said this during Sunday’s game as well, but it bears repeating: his defensive presence in Biedrins’ absence (and, frankly, even before) is no surprise. What is a bit of a revelation is his offensive game, especially on the S/R or just finding open seams in the lane.
** Jackson’s fadeaway misses over smaller defenders are getting tired.
** Great elevation from Ellis for the reverse lay — second game in a row where you get a glimpse of the old Monta.
** Whatever his other faults, Jackson has some great court vision.
** Not to tempt the jinx, but … still only one turnover for the Warriors to this point — and it’s not Jackson (!)
And then Randolph coughs it up twice.
HALFTIME:
** It’s sad to see an alleged Nellieball team get as tired as these guys are with the Knicks’ pace.
SECOND QUARTER:
** I really don’t remember Nate Robinson being this kind of 3-point bomber.
** Randolph’s ability to hang in mid-air and still block that shot (even with the foul) was really ludicrous.
** It’s amazing to think the Warriors have missed 17 shots to this point (9:44 remaining), and probably 10 of them have come within 6 inches of the hoop.
** 1and2: Biedrins should be the least expendable player on this team, IMHO, even moreso than Monta.
** Cazzie: That got a chuckle.
** Jackson is getting in that “I’m going to keep going one-on-one until I score, damnit” mode.
** Credit where it’s due: Azubuike with a great dish to find Maggette on the break. That’s so often been a turnover for Kelenna this season.
** Lottery Pick: Regarding Randolph … I thought he needed to pass out rather than forcing that 6-foot spin move from the lane, and he had a couple of silly fouls. But he held his own defensively, and that’s where the Warriors need to improve, long-term.
** I love Ronny Turiaf and the way he’s played for the last few weeks, but posting him up and expecting him to score with his back to the basket is not a good plan.
** 1and2: You want Nellie’s ear? Drop an e-mail to Scott Howard-Cooper.
** Azubuike is just carrying this team, but that Crawford-esque foul on a made 3 by Duhon hurts.
FIRST QUARTER:
** Three straight plays involving head-to-head battles between Al Harrington (who waves his hands to bring on more noise) and Stephen Jackson. Why do I think this will be a motif all night long?
** Why is Chris Duhon jacking up 3s, exactly?
** Jim: Ellis certainly can’t hit a layup at this point.
** Ronny Turiaf plays the S/R so much better than Andris, it’s kind of staggering. And it’s with the same set of wing defenders, so don’t say that it’s all the guards’ problem. Biedrins is simply not as good against those plays as he was last season.
** Kelenna Azubuike going off again. Showcase?
** Anthony (”He’s not a 5″ — Don Nelson) Randolph is once again the first option off the bench at center … and Nellie wonders why media folks don’t believe him anymore.

Monta looks terrible so far (four minutes in)
-
Duhon will drive and dish. W’s gotta force him to make the basket and not let him rack up assists.
-
With Harrington cooling off a bit, Jackson hasn’t been forcing his offense (trying to match Al), which has allowed Kelenna to stay grooved. KA is also looking very good on d.
-
Nice help from AR there on the Jeffries post-up of Jack.
-
Geoff, what do you think of all the trade talk? A game like this is interesting, because if the W’s win and Ronny ends up with a low rebounding total, it might convince Nellie that a rebounding big man really isn’t a neccessity, making Andris even more expendable.

Volume shooting, chirping at refs, lotsa tattoos…Stephan Jackson?? Nope Monta Ellis.
Jax is definitely rubbing off on Monta.
-
It’ s all AB’s fault. Trade him now.

Geoff, thoughts on AR’s performance tonight?
-
Geoff, you called it- the Jackson/Harrington battle is center stage, which has already resulted in Jack forcing too many shots.
-
I agree Geoff. The question is: are you in Nellie’s ear?

-
Azubuike is bailing everybody else out with his smart plays and hustle.
-
The lack of a floor general hurts.
-
Is it just me, or does it look like Turiaf forgot to eat his Wheaties this morning?
-
I noticed that too SJ Jim. I’m just not sure Ronny is a big minute guy.
-
Floor general wont do any good . Nelson has handed the team over to Jax and he dont need a floor general because he can do it all.

Let me help you out Nellie…Jax is gased! he hasn’t played defense the last three times down!
s-u-b-s-t-i-t-u-t-e!
-
Corey has 6 pts no boards or assists and 3 fouls yet Nelson leaves him in lol
-
Azi’s actually playing a solid game
-
Too stagnant (generally) on offense, too little hustle on defense in that second quarter. Unless Turiaf turns it up a notch in the second half, I could see Randolph getting a whole lot of minutes tonight.
-
Ronny scores six points and pulls three boards. So flash forward to a month from now. We’ve traded AB for Amare. Ronny sits with foul trouble. Amare’s our lone big. He’s not getting touches and stops rebounding. We stop getting the ball. We lose.
But if we’ve got AB, Ronny and Amare…
-
Good point about RT not being a big minute guy, 1and2. I guess he just seemed relatively lethargic from the get-go (to my eyes, at least). It’s not just a matter of getting up and down the floor… he hasn’t been boxing out well, or getting people pumped up the way he usually does.
-
One turnover in the first half. That’s borderline unbelieveable for this team.
-
Our lack of ball handling is getting exposed because we want to play at this pace but we wanna do it with the dribble while the knicks are pushing the pace up the floor with the pass and finding the open guy .
-
Why do we have such issues outletting the ball ahead to the open man .We kill our fast break by overdribbling instead of just outletting the ball ahead and filling the lanes .
-
I have to say it (and I’ve said it before)… Nate Robinson is fun to watch. I almost wanted him to covert that oop that we defended well midway through the 3rd.

It’s nice to see Randolph make some mistakes and see Nelson leave him in. I am glad he is making mistakes, this team isn’t going to win a title this year and you need to make mistakes to get better.
-
Geez I hate when we decide that we will only run plays for jackson and everyone else just watches when you have 4 guys who either have 20 or are at the door .
-
Fitz said somebody was out with an injured groin, but I didn’t catch who it was (or which team). Anybody catch that?
-
AR looked relatively composed and comfortable out there, despite a few errors. Seeing him hit his FT’s was a good sign.

Perfect time to bring monta back in so he can get injured with a 16 point lead.
-
just got to the game and there is 2 minutes left, up by 16, and all the starters are in. WOW
-
Geoff, Please ask Nellie why he doesn’t clear the bench when the game is clearly decided. Ought to be an interesting answer

Warriors: where the NBAs leading 3-point shooter racks up DNPs happens…
Go Nellie!

wordbfree February 10th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Jackson plays the ENTIRE game…
-
Morrow’s going to get 51 seconds PT.
-
wordbfree February 10th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Pathetic fool’s gold.
-
CazzieRussell February 10th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Gotta give it up to Jax…35 points ZERO T.O.’s! and oh yeah 10 dimes…
-
CazzieRussell February 10th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Kobe 61…LeBron 52…Jax 35…gotta luv those Knicks?
-
Larry P. February 10th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Great game Jax. Keep boosting that trade value!
-
wordbfree February 10th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Taking nothing away from Jax, Cazzie, but I’m way more impressed with Kelenna’s 22/10 and Randolph’s 12 on 4 of 6 and 7 boards 2 blocks in 13 minutes.
51 seconds for Morrow in a blowout is criminal. I officially hate Don Nelson.

Hey Geoff,
I appreciate all the work, but can you do more detailed recaps/interviews than just watching the games with your suggestions? i would love to hear more analysis than observations.
-
Geoff:
We all appreciate your insight and expertise - any information for a die hard is golden! However, this process of taking notes during the game is really not that helpful to a reader, especially if we aren’t reading your posts “real time” while the game is being played. I don’t read these kinds of posts at all if I miss the game (again, no context).
I am sure it is much easier for you to type a couple of lines while the game is being played, but your audience is left with wanting more of your analysis. Just some constructive feedback.

Geoff-
Has Nelson said anything about Randolph since the NY game? There were obviously a lot of positives and he did get some extended minutes ( maybe for showcase….). I am curious though to hear if Nelson has given him any public praise after all of the public scrutiny…. -
Rich Bagdon sucks!!
