Game No. 52, live: Jazz (29-22) at Warriors (16-35)
Filed under: Commentary;FOURTH QUARTER:
** Kyle Korver makes that open 3, this might be a different game. Instead he clanks it and C.J. Watson manages to convert an Ellis turnover into a layup for Azubuike. One down, 30 to go!
** Deron Williams is trying to win this single-handedly. It looks kind of like the way Jackson tried to carry the Warriors early this season.
** Azubuike with the tip-in between Okur and Millsap. The Jazz have officially packed it in.
** CC: That thought (re: triple-double) crossed my mind already. There’s no reason why Morrow and Randolph shouldn’t have been in as soon as Sloan waved the white flag.
THIRD QUARTER:
** A back-door cut from Ellis for the layup. That’s got to drive Jerry Sloan more nuts than anything. Talk about getting beaten at your own game.
** Ellis just got the same call as Steve Nash got on several occasions Friday, and I’m not buying it any more this evening.
** Off a rebound that Biedrins would have grabbed, Deron Williams gets the three-point play. Ouch.
** Ellis finally showing off his transition sprint from half court.
** Crawford may have 11 points in the quarter, with the And1 crossover/fade trey move, but I’m actually most impressed with his simple dish to Turiaf there for a layup and three-point play.
** Notwithstanding Utah’s road record, this is another impressive defensive performance, all of them keyed by Turiaf.
** The Warriors have shown they can play with the jazz, certainly. It’d be nice for them to give an example tonight that they can close out a blowout without comeback drama.
HALFTIME:
** Stephen Jackson as the second-best SF in the West? If you’re going purely by counting stats, maybe. If you’re going by per-minute efficiency, you could make a pretty compelling case he’s not even the second-best SF in California, ranking third behind Trevor Ariza and John Salmons.
** 1and2: OK, but can you guarantee that Nelson will actually play Randolph next year? Because Brandan Wright, when healthy, has been the Warriors’ best option at PF (unless you want to count Turiaf), and even he couldn’t get regular minutes for the first quarter of the season.
I think if the Warriors have a chance to get Griffin, they take it.
SECOND QUARTER:
** You can either pull down the defensive rebound, or you can let Millsap get the board, then block his putback attempt and gobble up that loose ball.
** You could see that airball coming from 80 feet away, or as soon as Randolph failed to give the ball up to Jamal Crawford in the backcourt.
** When the referees hold their pre-game meeting, do you think the crew chief says, “OK, we’ve got Golden State tonight, so make sure to check their feet whenever they get the ball in the corner?” Or do the Warriors just make that mistake so often that the refs can’t help but call it time and time and time again?
** CC: Nellieball also says passing the ball upcourt gets it there faster than dribbling. My problem was less about the non-pass to Crawford, and more about the fact that Randolph didn’t look once in those 80 feet — well, 65, since he pulled up — to make a pass, or even just locate where his teammates were.
** After seeing so much screen/pop action with Turiaf this season, it’s a pleasant surprise to see him getting free inside so easily on screen/rolls.
** Lazy pullup on the break by Maggette. If you’re going to shoot before anybody else is downcourt, why not at least make a move to the hoop and try to get fouled?
FIRST QUARTER:
** It’s like Ronny Turiaf has to be involved in every single play, at both ends of the floor.
** Kelenna Azubuike with the first ball-stall of the evening.
** Keep an eye how well Jamal Crawford is doing defensively — he was DESTROYED by the Jazz last time they played in Salta Lake, so that should be a good barometer.
** Stephen Jackson is not a one-on-one player. He can be pretty effective on screen-rolls, but he can’t — well, shouldn’t — be trying to break down a defender 22 feet from the cup.
** This is another game — arguably the fourth in the last six, giving them credit for the win over the Hornets (Jan. 30), the OT loss to the Spurs (Feb. 2) and the win over the Suns (Feb. 4) — where the Warriors are playing good enough defense to win, but the offensive is letting them down.
** Can somebody tell Deron Williams that Monta’s already wrecked one ankle and doesn’t need the other one broken?
** So much for Anthony Randolph not being a 5. Of course, with Mehmet Okur at the 5 for Utah and no legitimate 4 on the floor for the Jazz, Nelson can get away with that. As soon as Millsap comes back, I expect to see Turiaf off the bench — kind of like a home team matching lines in hockey.
PREGAME:
** The Jazz currently hold the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference standings and are on pace for just under 47 wins. For the Warriors to reach 47 wins, they would need to go 31-0, beginning tonight.
Just something to keep in mind if the Warriors win and keep blathering about the postseason.

That was a prime example of why AR does not get many minutes .Hes as dumb as a rock .
-
Geoff, Nellieball says everyone leads the break. Let’s not be a team mouthpiece now…
-
Jackson not giving that ball up to Crawford in the backcourt…
-
Why is Jax still in the game with 2 fouls ?

That was a nice box out by Turiaf on Milsap, before Korver dunked it. I wonder if Nelson pulls him now, just so there isn’t a double standard with Randolph.

Geoff, who will we see off the bench to replace Turiaf in the second half, Kurz or Randolph?
-
Seriously… it wasn’t a special Pietrus thing after all.
-
Jax was on Korver and failed to box out leading to that dunk .
Hes also 0-4 with 3 turnovers and even with the 2 fouls Nelson will not sub him . No accountability on this team .
-
Crap Ball
-
Jackson is an All Star, according to Bob Fitzgerald. Second best SF in the West.
-
He was the first one down the court, Geoff. But the shot was dumb no matter what. Jack and co. lazing it down the court as Randolph followed the playbook- PUSH THE BALL- is a larger issue. Why are they so lazy at such inopportune times?
-
Hey, I wonder where Randolph learned to take idiotic shots early in the clock with no teammates around, no passing?
Geoff, don’t be as big a tool as Fitz on this- Randolph plays freaking NEllie Ball and you freaking know it.
-
The mid-second quarter drought doesn’t happen with a strong point guard. Becuase Randolph already rebounds well and can only get better offensively, it might be better to draft a point guard this year (unless Blake Griffin lands in our lap). Should we trade down and take Patty Mills (if he declares)?
-
The problem with AR and I dont know who is in his ear .but hes trying to earn minutes as a rookie and you do that by making smart decisions with the basketball .Now once you earn that trust then you take some leeway but he needs to focus on playing team ball and filling in where needed .
If he was on that jazz how long do you think he would be in Sloans doghouse for that play ?
-
A point guard doesnt help us because we would still be running isolation to Jax and Maggette .the drought stopped because both realized they were not hot and were gonna look awfully bad to keep shooting at the pace they were going.
Our problem is we have two guys in Jax and maggette who throughout there careers have never been top dog. Well we have given them the money and the shots and now they are out to prove the doubters wrong but not getting the wins but with the numbers.
-
Luke: I don’t care why the drought stopped, I’m more concerned with the reasons it started
Geoff:
I agree about Griffin. It’s tough to know what Nellie will do. You’re right, though, he probably won’t play Randolph next year.
-
It started because after we missed a few shots while running our offense .Nelson subbed out Turiaf and isolated Corey and jax .A pg would not stop him from doing that lol .
-
Fitz calls ‘em like he sees ‘em, Geoff. No Spin Zone.

Marcus T says “Warriors want Amare”
The team that hasn’t callled on that should just be thrown out of the league on the spot.
Meanwhile, Nellie calls Sloan “stubborn.”
We’re gonna win. Utah dies on the road.
-
Utah: 9-16 on the road. Minnesota is 9-17. Toronto better than either.
So enjoy this one, for realsies.
-
Typical Jackson– meaningless numbers.
-
Jazz are a marginal “playoff” team. Not impressed.
Nellie Special for the easily swayed… -
Dude- Utah sucks.
They do this all the time on the road. Get League Pass. Seriously.I don’t have it I find ‘em free online, but seriously… if you didn’t know Utah did this, come on.
-
Hey Geoff- Jackson still in for his numbers.
-
Will Jackson be left in for the triple double?
Seriously- would it surprise ANYONE?
-
How bad does Nellie want Okur

-
Jackson still in.
This is a loss.

The starters need to prove they can play better than Morris Almond and co.
-
Turiaf against the Knicks will now be unwatchable, I predict (I think). He can’t be run like this.
Especially when it’s a blowout and we have no Biedrins. -
Why is Corey,Jax and Turiaf still in the game with 2+ minutes left and we are up 20+ points ?
I smell a trade coming what are we gonna do when Marco and Brandon return if nelson wont even empty the bench in a 20 game with 2 minutes left at home ?
-
Oh yeah, Geoff:
3rd road game in 4 nights for Utah.
-
Nellie can beta Jerry Sloan?
Such a meaningful display from Nellie, the stand-up guy.

Turiaf is getting major time as expected.
StakJack gets his double double 8A, 10R 20P
Maggette 24 pts. on 14 shots.Cynically, I can see the Warriors trying to show case guys for the Feb 19th deadline and one way to add value to your players is to WIN games. Nellie is going to win games and not develop guys until after the 19th, if then. After all, he’s got an NBA coaching record to win.

Randolph is the future. Jax, Maggette and Crawford are stopgaps. They won’t take this team anywhere. Better to go through the growing pains now with Randolph so he can learn how to be a pro than play those other bums 40mpg in a lost season. Otherwise, the warriors will stunt their growth for another 5 years.
-
wheres some amare talk geoff?
-
Jax, Maggette and Crawford are stop gaps for what ? Randolph?!? He was the 14th pick.
Andris developed into one of the NBA better Centers with little playing time his first 2 years. Patience and off season workouts helped him improve his game until he was an asset on the court and got to play.
-
M.Squared February 9th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Forget Amare if it means parting with Beidrens. Andrisis getting better and better despite Nelson not making him more of a focal point. Biedrens is a better rebounder and probably a better defender now and he is younger and doesnt have Amare’s attitude. Biedrens also is now and will be making waay less $ than him. Stoudamre is going to command a $17-20M per year contract and then pout the minute something doesnt go his way. For years he bitched about not wanting to be a center and now that they have one- he says that he can’t rebound and do his thing with Shaq down in the post. He is young and talented and if we were swapping some swings and a young for him, great- but Andris? Pass thanks.
-
M.Squared February 9th, 2009 at 10:18 am
PS-
I think the Heat are going to offer Beasley( aka-Glen Robinson JR.) and Marion for Stoudamire and make it happen. Lots of reports are saying the Bulls have the pieces, but their pieces might be too small/risky. -
Larry P. February 9th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Jax, Maggete, and Crawford are absolutely stop gaps. You’re telling me that you believe that that trio is the future? Andris was the 11th pick and developed into a good center, but apparently if you’re the 14th pick you have no chance? Those season tix you bought must come with a disclaimer that force you to endorse the garbage they put on the court, but I for one would much rather see Randolph get consistent minutes so we don’t have to wait 3 years for him to develop like we did with AB. In a terrible, lost season why would you not want to accelerate the youngsters development? Unless, of course, you’re one of those delusional fans who’s still holding out hope for the playoffs.
-
Hey Geoff,
How feasible is it that we actually get either Amare or Bosh?
-
“Jax, Maggete, and Crawford are absolutely stop gaps. You’re telling me that you believe that that trio is the future”
Those guys are not all stars but GSW signed two of these guys this season so, No, it doesn’t seem that the GSW think they are stop gaps. I’m not fans of those 3 guys but they’re are more proven quantities than AR.
AR hasn’t done squat and hasn’t demonstrated he can help if given more time. I’d hold off on the all-star dreams. The guy was picked 14th for a reason. Ask BJ Armstrong.
-
They suck, JoeSez. We got nothin if we’re not interested in the youth.
-
Trust me. I watched the Bulls develop Curry and Chandler, Fizer and Crawford. They got their minutes and had flashes of brilliance but also dumb mistakes and lazy off season work ethic. You get nothing but heart break when you play the kids. They don’t improve.
Maggette is a 6th Man on a playoff contender. (Spurs’ were rumored to want him at the mid-level exception).
StacJack the 3rd guy on a good team with a strong leader to keep him focused.
Crawford is a flawed player who never had to earn his minutes and apparently was never coached on defense.
All these guys are over paid but they’re better than giving a kid unearned minutes.
-
You didn’t watch s__t if that’s your take.
Return to ping pong, you don’t have it.
