Brandan Wright: Could he be a middle-class man’s Josh Smith?

(aka How To Lose Fake Money And Real Credibility, Part 10)

When the Warriors lost Baron Davis to free agency, one of the first names that crossed my mind as a recipient of all that leftover cash was Atlanta Hawks power forward Josh Smith.

Personally, I loved the idea of trying to pry away Smith from the Hawks, even though doing so would mean overpaying enough so as to make matching too unappetizing for Atlanta. Smith’s burgeoning offensive game was merely a bonus; more important to me was his Smith’s fluidity on the court and his shot-blocking ability from a forward position.

The Hawks retained Smith, of course, and have opened the season 3-0 with him in the fold, including a shocking win in New Orleans last night. Now, I’m not going to compare the two directly, but let me say this much: Last night, Brandan Wright sure looked an awful lot like a poor man’s Josh Smith. Maybe even a middle-class version. Wright doesn’t have the same kind of range on his jump shot – yet. But he does have those same Reed Richards-style arms, and that can make up for an awful lot out there.

If Wright can continue down that path, this season will have gotten tremendously more interesting for the Warriors.

In other news around the Association this evening:

    76ers (2-3) at Magic (2-2), 5:05 p.m.
    Pick: Magic -5

Dwight, seriously, it’s a 15-foot shot with no one in front of you. It can’t be this difficult.

Rockets (3-1) at Trail Blazers (1-3)
    Pick: Rockets -5.5

It’s still early, but the Trail Blazers just aren’t grabbing me and making me involuntarily sit up in my chair because of their greatness. They still might get there, but it’s going to take longer than most PDX fans were hoping, I’m afraid.

    Yesterday: 6-7
    Season record: 29-34

  1. +1 for the comic book reference…
-1 for the fantastic four reference..

Don’t worry, you still have plenty of time to get more points if you drop a Preacher, Y the Last Man, or The Walking Dead reference…

/If you’re unfamiliar with those 3, I can send a link for a CBR reader & the accompanying CBR’s of the first few issues.

  2. That reminds me, why can’t I hyperlink anything in the comments?

  3. You should be able to hyperlink, as far as I know. And I do want to read Y The Last Man now that the run is over.

  4. Smith is more explosive and more of 3 skill wise. Wright may weigh 10 lbs but stll plays 15 feet and in offensively. And Randolf looked more like Smith athletically and skill wise especially when he was a rookie. I still think the 2 of them in a front court could be great.

  5. Y Last Man… dragged on. It started strong but dragged on and ended on a weak note. I’m not sure what comic character in those adult oriented references would describe Wright’s game. Richards is a classic. Plastic man or elongated man, those references would have been lame.

We saw ONE good game. I watched it again on DVR and he was smooth and kept after the ball on defense. I hope the kid can be somewhat consistent.

  6. Joe: On the other hand, he’s 1-for-1 in games where he’s gotten decent run. He had a total of 24 minutes in the first four games.

  7. Josh: Wright definitely doesn’t have Smith’s range, which is why he’s the middle-class version.

  8. Josh,
After watching Randolph in China, I too made the Josh Smith comparison. Randolph has Smith’s explosiveness and flare. One rich man’s version of Smith and one middle class version. I’ll take that over one real version. The future is looking fun.

  9. ALL: The next 3 games should tell if Wright is real or a teaser: Memphis, @Sacramento and Minn. None are top teams.

4th game is vs Detroit and a match up with ‘Sheed.

  10. For anyone interested, here’s a link to a site where you can download a CBR file reader.

  11. If you’re interested in some comic CBR’s let me know and we’ll find a way to get them (or you could always support your local comic book store. I recommend Comic Outpost on Ocean ave or Amazing Fantasy on Irving st in San Francisco).

  12. Geoff I meant why isn’t there a simple hyperlink button so I don’t have to type out the code…

  13. Drew: Ahhhhh. It’s got a lot to do with the fact that this is a shoestring operation…

Joe: I will be VERY interested in seeing how Brandan matches up with Jason Thompson, assuming they wind up going head-to-head at some point on Sunday.

  14. The best comic book store in the city is Isotope Comics:

    http://www.isotopecomics.com

The owner, James Sime, is ridiculous. Jim Lee, Mark Millar, Tony Philips, Ed Brubaker…Isotope hosts the baddest parties.

I played Brubaker at air hockey. He won. But he still gave me a copy of Sleeper #1.

Heck, it’s the best comic book store in the Bay….it’s a comic book lounge.

  15. While I’ve never been, Isotope sounds like a perfect comic shop for hipsters and other deushbaggery, just like the toolbag at Comix Experience…Amazing Fantasy has been open in one form or another for almost 25 years, and I’ve been shopping there since I learned to read. The other Johnny-come-lately carpetbagger out of towners can suck it…..

  16. oh wait a minute, I have been to these toolbag’s shop when it was on Noriega. The owner’s wannabe zoot suit elvis thing wears thin reaaaaaaaaaaally quick.

  17. …and in a surprising twist Geoff started hosting Comixcon on 48minutes.net.

  18. *Hangs head in shame*

/started this, should have stopped a while ago but I get passionate about comics.
